동 . 서 . 북쪽은 화성시，남쪽은 평택시에 접하고 있다. 면적은 42.71km2이고，인구는 22만 6379명（오산시청 홈페이지 기준）이다. 

행정구역으로는 6개 행정동（32개 법정동）이 있다. 시청은 경기도 오산시 오산동에 있다.

1960년 1월 1일 면세가 확장됨에 따라 오산읍으로 승격되었으며，1970년 6월 10일 화성군청사가 수원에서 오산읍으로 이전되었다. 

1989년 1월 1일 오산읍이 시로 승격되어 화성군에서 독립, 분리되었으며 1995년 4월 20일에는 평택군 진위면의 고현리 청호리 및 갈곶리 일부가 이 시에 편입되었다.

금암동의 오산금암동지석묘군（庭山錦巖洞支石墓群，경기도 기념물 제112호）에서 30기 이상의 지석묘가 발견된 데 이어 수청동지석묘와 외삼미동지석묘（경기도 기념물 제211호）도 있다.

관방유적으로 지곶동에 삼국시대에 축성된 것으로 짐작되는 독산성 및 세마대지가 있다.

It borders Hwaseong City to the north and Pyeongtaek City to the south. It has an area of 42.71 km2 and a population of 226,379 (based on Osan City Hall's website).

There are six administrative wards (32 statutory wards). City Hall is located in Osan-dong, Gyeonggi-do.

On January 1, 1960, the tax exemption was expanded and promoted to Osan-eup. On June 10, 1970, Hwaseong-gun Office Building was relocated from Suwon to Osan-eup.

On January 1, 1989, Osan-eup was promoted to a city and separated from Hwaseong-gun. On April 20, 1995, parts of Cheongho-ri and Galgot-ri in Jinwi-myeon, Pyeongtaek-gun were incorporated into the city.

Following the discovery of more than 30 dolmens in Geumam-dong, Osan Geumam-dong, Gyeonggi-do Monument No. 112 in Geumam-dong, Sucheong-dong and Oesammi-dong Tomb (Gyeonggi-do Monument No. 211) are also found.

Jigot-dong has Doksanseong Fortress and Semadaeji, which are presumed to have been built during the Three Kingdoms Period.
