인구는 2019년 기준 15,520,000명. 터키의 최대도시이다. 터키의 수도는 앙카라이지만 앙카라보다 이스탄불이 더 큰 도시이고 더 유명하다. 과거 동로마 제국과 오스만 제국의 수도였다.
330년 로마 제국 황제 콘스탄티누스 1세가 이 곳을 제국의 새 수도로 정한 시점부터 1922년 술탄제가 폐지되면서 오스만 제국이 멸망하는 시기까지 무려 1592년 간 두 제국의 수도의 지위를 유지한 유구한 역사적 도시이다.
도시 주인이 '고대 그리스 → 로마 제국(동로마 제국) → 오스만 제국 → 터키' 순으로 바뀌었다.
도시 이름도 '비잔티온(비잔티움) → 콘스탄티누폴리스(콘스탄티노폴리스) → 코스탄티니예 → 이스탄불'순으로 바뀌었으며, 이스탄불(İstanbul)이라는 이름은 터키어이다.
행정구역으로서의 이스탄불은 İstanbul büyük şehir belediyesi라고 한다.
이 도시는 유럽과 아시아에 걸쳐 있다는 지리적 특이성으로도 유명하다.
비슷하게 유럽과 아시아 경계선에 있는 도시로 러시아의 예카테린부르크나 카자흐스탄의 아티라우도 있지만, 인지도에서 엄청난 차이가 난다.
이 때문에 터키의 수도를 이곳으로 아는 경우가 많은데 터키의 수도는 앙카라이다. 터키 헌법에는 수도를 앙카라로 한다고 명시되어 있다.
